Dr Alfonso Jurado-Román is currently Interventional cardiologist at La Paz University Hospital (Madrid). He was graduated in Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid (Extraordinary Award and Scholarship for academic excellence from the Community of Madrid) and did his training in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology at University Hospital 12 de Octubre (Madrid). He achieved his PhD degree in Myocardial Infarction at 2015 from the Complutense University of Madrid. He has developed great interest in cardiomyopathies, with training at the Heart Hospital in London and working as research collaborator at University Hospital 12 de Octubre. He has been professor of Cardiology during seven years and professor of statistics during 2 years. He has been the Cardiology Trainee Program Tutor while his period at the University General Hospital of Ciudad Real. He is author of 85 Scientific publications in international journals and 185 book chapters. Currently his main interest in interventional cardiology are Complex PCI, including chronic total occlusions and calcified lesions, and intracoronary imaging and Physiology. He is currently coordinating these areas at University Hospital La Paz and is the principal investigator of several studies in this field as Roller Coaster Trial (Rotational Atherectomy, Lithotripsy or laser in calcified lesions) and LUDICO study (Coronary laser at undilatable and uncrossable lesions). He is member of EuroCTO club an also of Euro4C. In addition, he is member of the European Association of Percutaneous coronary interventions (EAPCI), member of the ESC working group on Myocardial and pericardial diseases and member of the ESC working group on Acute cardiac care. He has also coursed a Master in Clinical Management, Medical and Assistance Management and a Master in Current Approach to Structural Heart Disease.

Dr Martins completed his undergraduate Science degree at the University of Western Australia in 1984, then completing a MSc in Clinical Biochemistry in 1986. In 1987 he commenced a Ph D studying the role of high density lipoprotein (HDL) in diabetes (Hackett Scholarship). In 1993 he was awarded a Saw fellowship from the University of Western Australia to conduct studies relating to the metabolism of chylomicrons and their remnants and the influence of size and composition on their clearance from blood and its importance to atherosclerosis. The publications between 1988-2000 have shown that Dr Martins has made a valuable and solid contribution to the field of atherosclerosis and heart disease. His work has concentrated on understanding the role of dietary cholesterol rich particles and the subsequent clearance and metabolism from the blood plasma and their potential risk for the development of heart disease. These research studies have shown that the type of dietary fat and increased consumption are important risk factors for heart disease.

Wilbert S Aronow MD is Clinical Professor of Medicine; Director Cardiology Clinic; and Senior Associate Program Director and Research Mentor for the Residency and Fellowship Programs Department of Medicine Westchester Medical Center/New York Medical College He received his MD from Harvard Medical School He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Geriatric Cardiology in 2003 the Joseph T Freeman Award from the Gerontological Society of America in 2005 and a faculty award from New York Medical College in 2006 for mentoring the most trainees who had original research papers published during 20042005 Dr Aronow has been a member of 46 editorial boards of medical journals a guest editor for 5 other medical journals and has reviewed manuscripts for 176 medical journals He has been a consultant to numerous government agencies and a member of committees in numerous professional societies

Sy Alexander is currently a Professor, Director of Intermediate care unit in the division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Medical centre Boulevard, Wake Forest Baptist Health, USA, continuing research in the specialized scientific area of Acute Lung Injury, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Dr. Sy Alexander is serving as an honorary reviewer for Journal of Pulmonary & Respiratory Medicine & other reputed journals and has authored several articles along with chapters in different books related to Critical care.

Dr. Ito completed his M.D. from Nagoya City University in 1984 and Ph.D. (Cardiology) from Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medicine in 1994. He has vast experience in cardiology, especially interventional cardiology (coronary and peripheral artery disease) and cardiac rehabilitation. He worked at a few affiliations of Nagoya City University from 1984-1996 as a cardiologist. He was a research scientist at the Washington (DC) Hospital Center (Interventional Cardiology) from 1996-1998. He worked at Nagoya City University as an instructor from 1998-2001. He was a director at Toyohashi Heart Center from 2001-2004, at Moriyama Municipal Hospital from 2004-2007, and at Nagoya City East Medical Center from 2007. He works at Sankuro Hospital, Toyota, Japan since February, 2016. Since 2007 he also has worked as a director of Japan Cardiovascular Imaging Core Laboratory (Japan CICL). Dr. Ito works as a director at Japan Cardiovascular Imaging Core Laboratory (J-CICL, Tokyo, Japan) in many interventional randomized controlled trials. He is editorial board members of several scientific journals regarding cardiology.

His major area of research includes interventional cardiology, especially in invasive coronary imaging (QCA, OCT, IVUS etc.) , cardiac rehabilitation, and physical fitness.

Dr. Zoe Bouslenko is a physician, specialised in cardiology and works at the Cardiology Rehabilitation Foundation S. Maugeri I.R.C.C.S in Turin. The main purpose of her work consists of preventing cardio-vascular pathologies and early diagnosis as well as cardiac rehabilitation. She is a member of the SIEC (Italian Association for Echocardigraphy), ANMCO (National Association of Physicians). Training in functional and regulatory medicine at the Italian School of functional medicine (SIMF).

I completed my PhD in molecular biology and reproductive immunology at the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing in July 2002. As part of my Ph.D. training, I identified rhesus monkey beta-subunit chorionic gonadotropin (rmCGβ). Subsequently, I developed a DNA vaccine for immune-contraceptive therapy based on rmCGβ, as well as explored the potential treatments for endocrine tumors using this DNA immune-vaccine. I pursued my postdoctoral training at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School from August, 2002 to May, 2009. During my postdoctoral training period at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, I focused on understanding transcriptional regulation of angiogenesis in endothelial cells, focusing on the cell growth arrest gene, Gax, which encodes an anti-angiogenic protein (Blood, 2008; 111(3): 1217-1226; Mol Cell Biol, 2010; 30(15): 3902-3912; J Biol Chem, 2007; 282(1): 507-517; Cardiovascular Research, 2010; 87(4): 723-731). From May, 2009, I started my early-career research as a senior scientist at Washington University School of Medicine under the guidance of Dr. Gerald Dorn. My research has focused on molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial apoptosis, necrosis and mitophagy in heart disease. Our work has revealed that the death-promoting protein Nix stimulates both apoptosis and necrosis death pathways, determined by its subcellular localization in the mitochondria versus ER (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA (feature article), 2010; 107(20): 9035-9042). To study the biological roles of the mitochondrial outer membrane fusion proteins Mfn1 and Mfn2 in the heart, we generated cardiac specific conditional knockout mouse models. Our results show that both Mfn1 and Mfn2 are essential in modulating mitochondrial fusion-fission remodeling, while only Mfn2, but not Mfn1, is critical for mitochondrial-ER Ca2+ flux, mitochondrial genomic integrity, and mitochondrial quality control. Phosphorylated Mfn2 is required for PINK1-Parkin mediated mitochondrial elimination (Science; 2013; 340: 471-475; Circulation Research. 2012; 111(7): 863-875; Circulation Research 2011; 109(12): 1327-1331). Our research findings have provided new insights into the understanding of diseases caused by dysfunctional mitochondria such as heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, aging and Alzheimer's disease. Currently I work at Albert Einstein College of Medicine as a Research Assistant professor. Our research is focusing on studying the mechanism of cell death (apoptosis, necrosis), mitochondrial related macro-autophagy and Chaperon-mediated autophagy (CMA), and the molecular mechanism of cardiac function protection in Chaperon-mediated autophagy deficient hearts.

My research interest is to understand the mechanism of autophagy, mitochondrial, and cell death in the heart, and to develop the treatment to reduce heart damage after heart attack.

Dr. Dayue Darrel Duan, MD, PhD, FAHA, is a Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Pharmacology and Principle Investigator of the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Phenomics in the Center for Molecular Medicine at School of Medicine, University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada, USA. Dr. Duan discovered several anion channels in the heart and has made significant original contributions to the study of biophysics, physiology, pharmacology, and molecular biology of ion channels in the cardiovascular system. His current research is focusing on the phenomics, functional genomics and proteomics of ion channels in the cardiovascular systems. The Duan laboratory has established several animal models for cardiac diseases and hypertension and has the capacity to study the genome-phenome relationship and molecular mechanisms for cardiovascular disease at multiple levels ranging from whole animal to molecular levels. He delivered over 200 invited lectures and seminars throughout the world, and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters

Dr. Josh J. Wang received his MD and MS from Hubei University of Medicine and Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences in China, and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University affiliated hospitals. After he came to the United States, Dr Wang completed his post-doctoral fellowship training at Medical University of South Carolina and University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (2003 and 2006), then became a Research Associate and junior faculty at Health Sciences Center. He joined the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine as a faculty member in 2012. Dr Wang is an accomplished clinical investigator, researcher and educator. His research interests focus on diabetes related vascular complications such as diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic peripheral vascular diseases. He has lectured nationally and internationally. Dr. Wang has authored/co-authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers, review articles, book chapters in the field of diabetes and vascular diseases.

His research interests focus on diabetes related vascular complications such as diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic peripheral vascular diseases.

Hui Sun completed her MD degree at Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Science in China, followed by Internal Medicine residency training in Hubei medical University, clinical fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute in China, and clinical fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology at Louis Pradel Cardiovascular Hospital in Lyon, France. She subsequently completed my PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering at Claude Bernard University Lyon-I in France, and post-doctoral training in Cardiac Ion Channel Electrophysiology and Excitation-Contraction Coupling at Montreal Heart Institute in Canada. She worked as Research Scientist in Heart & Stroke Richard Lewar Center of Excellence at University of Toronto, Canada, and as Principal Scientist at Excigen Inc., Baltimore before joining Johns Hopkins University in 2009. She is currently a Research Faculty in the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. My current research interests are (1) Ion Channels in vascular physiology and in pulmonary hypertension; and (2) Vagal afferent excitability in health and in disease.

Dr. Masao Kakoki is a physician-scientist in nephrology and cardiovascular medicine. He obtained the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Tokyo in Japan. Since he joined Dr. Oliver Smithies’ laboratory in 2001, he has devoted himself to molecular biology with emphasis on understanding the molecular mechanisms that are responsible for cardiovascular and renal dysfunction in diabetes mellitus and aging using genetically altered mice. He proposed in 2004 a unique mouse model to modify the expression of the gene of interest in a wide range, which was cited as “three prime mice”. This technique alter gene expression in mice by targeted replacement of the 3’ untranslated region (UTR) of the gene of interest with more unstable 3’UTR or with more stable 3’UTR. He is studying the renal and cardiovascular phenotype in mice with graded expression levels of therapeutic candidate genes to find new ways to prevent or treat diabetes- and aging-associated complications in humans.
